Lifting Something Allright

“You know, for an agnostic person I tend to pray a lot,” I confided in a friend recently. “I’m not sure about the effect though. Perhaps I’m doing something wrong.”

She was quiet for a while. Then she said: “Do you fold your hands and everything? Or do you just talk to yourself out loud, like when you go on one of your long walks?”

I shrugged. “Tried both. Hasn’t delivered me any miracles yet.”

“What exactly are you praying for? Can you give me a description, or is it something vague?”

As I opened my mouth to formulate an answer, I realised there is no such thing as exactness in meditating or praying or whatever we like to call it. There only is the act itself, a little pause to help you focus on what you really want.

And, as it turns out, I want many different things, on many different layers, but most of all, I want my spirit lifted, like this:

“I think I am praying to find my way home,” I said. “That’s all I really want – to go back from where I came from, and recharge.”

My friend, who is several years my senior, sighed. “You don’t need to pray for that. It will happen, one day it will happen. In the meantime, try and draw and write and read more. You’re always more gentle when you find the time to do the things that help you in this world.”

Okidoki. Thanks, friend.
